GROWING COMMUNITY GYMUNED SY'N TYFU

INSTALLATION / GOSOD

The Garden Project / Prosiect Yr Ardd

Photo montage of locals in their gardens during August and September 2020. Everyone in the photos originally picked up a plant from the micro plant stall in front of the gallery, which had an honesty box for donations whilst the gallery was unable to open during the first lockdown. The plant stall was a mix of vegetable plants and edible flowers.

Mima followed the plant trail to visit a few of the owners in their gardens, which became their sanctuaries over the summer months. The photos are displayed to create one piece representing the connections made in the community through the plant stall. At the end of the exhibition the montage will be divided and gifted to the plant owners in the same way the seeds were sown and then divided to provide homegrown food in the area.

The plant stall itself became a symbol of hope at a time of seed shortages, empty supermarket shelves and when many shops were closed. Mima plans to do the micro stall again next Spring.

This image shows the montage of the installation as seen hanging in the gallery. Scroll below for close up details.

THE GARDEN PROJECT / PROSIECT YR ARDD

English

Mima was inspired to start the Garden Project following the initial lockdown in March. Having been forced to close the gallery and all other income streams cut off, Mima set to keeping herself busy in the garden as a distraction from the daily worries of the pandemic and earning a living. It was a beautiful distraction. Mima got a little carried away with sowing seeds and with so many seedlings decided to start up a ‘micro stall’ in front of the gallery with an honesty box. The plants were a mix of organic vegetables, herbs and edible flowers. They proved to be really popular and Mima really enjoyed sharing her passion for growing with others.

Mima also loves a good story and generally talking gardens. She thought it would be interesting to track down some of the plants and visit the gardens where they ended up, to see how the plants grew and meet the people behind the plants with the aim of creating a photographic collection of gardener’s portraits. The idea was to encourage growing, engage with the local community and lift the spirits during such a terrible year. Mima took to social media and word of mouth to find some willing volunteers that had picked up plants from the micro stall and who were happy to take part.

The gardens came in all shapes and sizes and so did the stories. Many gardeners were at different stages with growing experience and a few were growing for the first time. All the gardeners shared a pure joy and love for growing and everyone seemed to want to continue in different ways, despite some big storms in the middle of the summer that proved a challenging growing year. The resulting portraits offer a tiny glimpse into the gardener’s worlds and show a community united through their love of growing. Future ideas include setting up a community garden for all to enjoy together, and thanks to the arts council of Wales and National Lottery funding Mima is able to gift the pictures to the gardeners at the end of the exhibition as a memento for taking part in the project and making it through a very tough year.

Yn ystod y cyfnod clo cyntaf ym mis Mawrth cafodd  ei hysbrydoli i drefnu Prosiect Yr Ardd.  Tynnodd ei gardd ei meddwl oddi ar ei phryderon am y pandemig a chadw'r blaidd o'r drws ar ôl iddi orfod cau'r galeri. Roedd hi'n mwynhau hi hun cymaint nes iddi fynd dros ben llestri braidd yn plannu hadau. Penderfynodd creu stondin bach o flaen yr oriel â blwch gonestrwydd. Cymysgedd o berlysiau a blodau bwytadwy oedd y planhigion hyn. Yr oeddynt yn hynod o boblogaidd a gwnaeth Mima wir fwynhau rhannu ei chariad am arddio ag eraill.

Mae Mima hefyd yn hoff iawn o straeon a thrin a thrafod gerddi yn gyffredinol. Felly penderfynodd byddai'n ddiddorol ymweld â rhai o'r gerddi oedd bellach yn gartrefi i'r planhigion, er mwyn gweld eu tyfiant, a chwrdd rhai o'r garddwyr er mwyn creu casgliad ffotograffig o'r cyfnod. Amcan Mima oedd  annog garddio, cysylltu â'r rheini oedd wedi magu'r planhigion a chodi ysbryd y pentref mewn blwyddyn mor ofnadwy.  Daeth o hyd i wirfoddolwyr ar lafar a thrwy gyfryngau cymdeithasol, oedd wedi cymryd ei phlanhigion o'r stondin bychan.

Roedd yna gerddi o bob math, a hanesion hefyd o bob lliw a llun. Roedd maint y profiad oedd gan bob un o'r garddwyr yn wahanol – rhai oedd wedi bod yn arddio am amser maith, ac ambell un oedd newydd ddechrau am y tro cyntaf. Yr oedd pawb yn rhannu'r cariad am yr hyn yr oeddynt yn eu gwneud. Er gwaethaf y stormydd garw yng nghanol Yr Haf, roedd pawb yn dal ati. Mae'r portreadau'n rhoi cip olwg i ni o fywydau'r garddwyr ac yn dangos cymuned mewn undod. Mae ambell syniad wedi dod  o'r prosiect- sy'n cynnwys dechrau gardd gymunedol gall pawb mwynhau â'i gilydd.  Diolch i'r arian mae Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru a'r Loteri Genedlaethol wedi  rhoi mae Mima'n gallu rhoi'r lluniau mae hi wedi tynnu i'r arddwyr fel cofrodd o'r cyfnod.

GROWING ART /
TYFU CELF

During the garden visits and time spent in her own garden Mima also captured the flowers and garden life in tiny detail over the course of the summer and early Autumn. Fascinated by the shapes, textures and patterns to be found Mima built up a new collection and sourced inspiration from some of the great photographers from the past such as Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe and Imogen Cunningham to blend with her own contemporary style and finally printed on Hahnemühle German Etching Giclée fine art paper. Mima is also really fascinated by the lifecycle of plants as well as the meaning of flowers and their properties for healing benefits, which are described with some of the works.

Mima holds a 1st Class (BA hons) and has a master’s in photography amongst other skills and she was thrilled to curate the Garden Project exhibition for a fellow group of artists for all to enjoy.

Yn ystod ei hamser yn y gerddi (gan gynnwys gardd hi hun) tynnodd Mima lawer o luniau o flodau a bywyd gardd dros yr Haf a'r Hydref.. Mae hi wedi creu casgliad newydd gan ddefnyddio arddull gyfoes ei hun, ond hefyd wedi cymryd ysbrydoliaeth o ffotograffwyr mawr megis Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe  ac Imogen Cunningham.   Argraffwyd y lluniau ar bapur arlunio Almaeneg Hahemuhle Etching Giclé.

Mae diddordeb hefyd gan Mima mewn cylchred bywyd planhigion, symbolaeth flodau a sut y maent yn llesol i ni.

Mae ganddi radd dosbarth cyntaf (Anrhydedd) a M.A. mewn ffotograffiaeth. Gwnaeth hi wir mwynhau gweithio ar Brosiect Yr Ardd er mwyn ei chyd artistiaid a garddwyr.
