Church Bay / Porth Swtan
Iain Davidson
Church Bay (Porth Swtan)
Church Bay is an idyllic bay on the northwest coast of Anglesey. This print takes the view northward over the bay, looking towards Carmel Head, with a foreground of silhouetted coastal vegetation, rock strata, seashells and Celtic knotwork.
The bay’s Welsh name, Porth Swtan, is believed to refer to “sea-white” fish, or whiting, and was the name of the bay before 19th century sailors began to use the church as a landmark.

Porth Swtan
Mae ‘Porth Swtan’ yn fae delfrydol ar arfordir gogledd-orllewin Ynys Môn. Mae'r print hwn yn cymryd yr olygfa tua'r gogledd dros y bae, gan edrych tuag at Trwyn y Gadair, gyda blaendir o lystyfiant arfordirol amliniol, strata creigiau, cregyn môr a chlymwaith Celtaidd.
Credir bod enw y bae, Porth Swtan, yn cyfeirio at bysgod “gwyn y môr”, neu gwyniaid, a dyna oedd enw’r bae cyn i forwyr y 19eg ganrif ddechrau defnyddio’r eglwys fel tirnod.
