Based on the story of Ceridwen’s Chase. For centuries, the salmon stood as a symbol of wisdom and prophecy and was held sacred by the Celts, Picts and numerous other cultures. In this instance the scene evokes one of the great tales of Welsh mythology, the creation and birthing of the heroic bard Taliesin. In this myth, the young Taliesin (still known as Gwion Bach), having accidentally consumed the divine elixir of wisdom, the ‘Awen’, finds himself in a furious and terrifying flight from an enraged goddess, Ceridwen. Discovering he now has the gift of shapeshifting into any form he wishes, he first turns himself into a hare and then into a salmon, only to be pursued by the goddess who, herself, transforms into a greyhound then otter to continue the chase. Some say this enigmatic tale was a way to mark the key phases and challenges of life, whilst others believe it represented, in veiled form, the phases of training and rites of passage for initiate druids. Whatever the tale truly signifies, this painting

is about movement, life and the passion and pursuit for the things our heart and soul most desires.

Yn yr achos hwn mae'r olygfa yn dwyn i gof un o chwedlau mawr chwedloniaeth Cymru, sef creu a geni'r bardd arwrol Taliesin. Yn y myth hwn, mae’r Taliesin ifanc (sy’n dal i gael ei adnabod fel Gwion Bach), wedi bwyta elicsir dwyfol doethineb, yr ‘Awen’, yn ddamweiniol, yn cael ei hun mewn ehediad cynddeiriog ac arswydus oddi wrth y widdon gynddeiriog, Ceridwen. Gan ddarganfod fod ganddo bellach y ddawn o newid siâp i unrhyw ffurf y mae'n dymuno, mae'n troi ei hun yn sgwarnog yn gyntaf ac yna'n eog, dim ond i gael ei erlid gan y widdon sydd, ei hun, yn trawsnewid yn filgi ac yna'n ddyfrgi i barhau â'r helfa. Dywed rhai fod y stori enigmatig hon yn ffordd o nodi cyfnodau allweddol a heriau bywyd, tra bod eraill yn credu ei bod yn cynrychioli, mewn

ffurf gudd, y cyfnodau hyfforddi a defodau newid byd ar gyfer derwyddon cychwynol. Beth bynnag mae'r chwedl yn ei olygu mewn gwirionedd, mae'r paentiad hwn yn ymwneud â symud, bywyd a'r angerdd ar ganlyn yr hyn y mae ein calon a'n henaid yn eu

dymuno fwyaf.
