The name ‘Twrch’ in Welsh hints at the enchanted boar associated with the great love story of Culhwch and Olwen, the ‘Twrch Trwyth’, and yet the boar of this painting, far from appearing to  us as the typically frightening and monstrous creature of the hunt so commonly associated with such ancient tales, evokes a more tender reminder of how caring and protective these wild creatures are of their families and young. To the natural world, the boar, far from being monstrous and destructive, are creatures very much associated with the health and regeneration of the soil and the landscape they inhabit. Without their diligent digging and turning over of tough turf and compacted soil, and their spreading of acorn enriched manures, woodlands and hillsides quickly become choked with weeds, brackens and brambles, a problem we can very much see in locations where they are absent to this day.
