Jess Hinsley

​Jess Hinsley is a landscape artist based in Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons), Wales. She has a background in illustration, graduating from the University of Gloucestershire in 2014, but she found that this was too creatively restrictive. When travelling in 2019, she noticed that her sketchbooks were almost entirely full of landscape drawings, and that her natural style was much more loose than her illustration work had been. This led her down the path of landscape painting. Jess’s work explores her love of nature and wild places. Mountains are where she feels most at home and alive and therefore they are the main focus of her practice. She explores the mountains in two ways: on foot and with her brush. When the world feels frightening or life feels overwhelming, immersing herself in wilderness helps her to re-ground herself. She paints mostly en plein air in acrylic, using quick, spontaneous marks. The colours she uses reflect the richness she sees in the landscape. She hopes to bring the joy and sense of freedom that she feels in the mountains to you, the viewer.
